The dvf file extension is used for a Sony proprietary format for compressed voice files that is commonly used by Sony dictation recorders. Use the Digital Voice Editor program that comes with the ICD recorders or download it from Sony. When you save the file you should scroll down. Switch Plus for Mac Switch sound file conversion software is an audio file format converter for Mac OS. It can convert audio files from many different file formats into mp3 or wav files including wav to mp3, mp3 to wav, wma to mp3 and much more.
As I am exploring my MacBook, I realised that it has a few flaws especially when I have been a PC user for the past 2 decades.Firstly, what is a “DVF” file? The DVF file extension is a compressed audio file format used by Sony’s IC digital audio recorders. DVF stands for digital voice file, and it was initially designed by Sony as a proprietary files extension for their ICD voice recorders, which are hand-held voice recorder that can download their files directly to a Windows-based PC.Unfortunately, such “.dvf” files could not be read in a Mac by using a normal MP3 player. In PC, you could be using the Windows Media Player and in Mac, it would be iTunes. Even in a PC, you need to install their specific Sony Digital Voice Recorded & Editor software to be able to read the file. The voice recorder (as shown above) which my company is using is OLD. I think it was purchased back in 2001 or 2003.
So even to find the latest software to be installed in a newer machine can be a pain in the arse. But today, we are not going to discuss that.
Today, we are going to find a solution to read this file in a Mac.Possible solution AThe first alternative that came to mind is to download the Sony Digital Voice Player into Mac. This software is available on the internet BUT it does not work for a Mac. The software has an “.exe” extension, i.e. Software application for a Windows-based PC. A Mac software application would need to be a “.dmg”.
Hence, solution A failed.Possible solution BTo download DVF file converters to convert these type of files into MP3 or WAV in Mac. I downloaded both Switch Sound File Converter and Express Scribe. There were no hiccups in the installation of these applications onto Mac, however, when I tried to open my DVF files from these software, in an attempt to convert them to MP3, I was not even allowed to select them. So, solution B failed too.Possible solution CThis solution is less perfect but it works. The imperfect part is that, you need to have a Windows-based PC as an “assistant”. It is similar to solution B. I downloaded Switch Sound File Converter from Softonic. After downloading, follow the instructions to install the software.
The software looks like this:The instructions to convert a file is fairly simple. However, the first time I tried, it failed. It says that I needed to install a Sony Player Plug-in for WMP.
And so I did. So I downloaded the plug-in from NCH Software at:.Maybe your PC would already have this plug-in and hence do not require this additional step. After you restart your PC post-installing the plug-in, you can start converting the DVF files into MP3. This is quite easy.First, click on “Add Files” from the Switch Sound File Converter:The DVF file would look like this.Select the DVF file to be converted from your PC.Once you clicked on the “Convert” button, the “Saving Audio File” window will appear automatically. Also, you need to decide on the “Output Format”. I selected.mp3 so that it could be played in most media player. And you need to “direct” where you want to the converted file to be saved.
I always choose “Desktop” so it will be easy for me to locate. There! Once the file is converted, you can play it with any basic media player and of course read it in iTunes from Mac.
